| A RESOLUTION |
| |
1 | Designating the week of May 11 through 15, 2009, as "Bike to |
2 | Work Week" in Pennsylvania. |
3 | WHEREAS, The League of American Bicyclists has declared May |
4 | 11 through 15, 2009, as "Bike to Work Week"; and |
5 | WHEREAS, During this week, bicycling enthusiasts throughout |
6 | the nation will be encouraging employers to hold events that |
7 | encourage employees to ride their bicycles to work as a |
8 | healthful, economical means of commuting that is friendlier to |
9 | the environment than driving a motor vehicle; and |
10 | WHEREAS, Companies and other organizations that participate |
11 | in "Bike to Work Week" help to build morale and encourage |
12 | comaraderie among their employees; and |
13 | WHEREAS, When compared to sedentary employees, physically |

1 | active employees are known to be typically more alert, take |
2 | fewer sick days and are more productive; and |
3 | WHEREAS, Biking to work provides an efficient and enjoyable |
4 | means of getting much-needed regular exercise without having to |
5 | set aside additional time before or after the workday to "work |
6 | out"; and |
7 | WHEREAS, Biking reduces each individual's "carbon footprint," |
8 | helps to reduce traffic congestion and can save commuters money |
9 | on fuel and other expenses associated with driving to work; and |
10 | WHEREAS, People who bike to work typically arrive faster than |
11 | their driving counterparts, particularly if the commute is a |
12 | distance of three miles or less, and have equal or better |
13 | commuter times for distances of five to seven miles in urban |
14 | areas; and |
15 | WHEREAS, Until the spikes in gasoline prices in recent |
16 | months, a lack of incentive, plus a lack of knowledge about the |
17 | benefits of biking to work, deterred many employees from |
18 | commuting by bicycle, even though more than half of the United |
19 | States population lives within five miles of their workplace; |
20 | and |
21 | WHEREAS, With such volatility in gasoline prices, it has |
22 | become evident to many Americans that it makes good economic |
23 | sense to bike to work as an alternative to driving; and |
24 | WHEREAS, In 2008, more than 10,352 people tried biking to |
25 | work for the first time during a city-sponsored event in Denver, |
26 | Colorado; and |
27 | WHEREAS, Based on past "Bike to Work" events, one in five |
28 | participants will likely choose to change their method of |
29 | transportation by biking to work on a regular basis; therefore |
30 | be it |

1 | RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives designate the |
2 | week of May 11 through 15, 2009, as "Bike to Work Week" in |
3 | Pennsylvania and encourage all citizens to participate in the |
4 | events planned in this Commonwealth. |
