| A RESOLUTION |
| |
1 | Congratulating the Pennsylvania College of Technology on the |
2 | occasion of its 20th anniversary as an affiliate of The |
3 | Pennsylvania State University. |
4 | WHEREAS, The House of Representatives takes great pride in |
5 | recognizing those educational institutions that are committed to |
6 | the enrichment of the people of this Commonwealth and their |
7 | development into well-rounded citizens with productive, |
8 | meaningful lives; and |
9 | WHEREAS, The institution that would become the Pennsylvania |
10 | College of Technology was informally established in 1914 in the |
11 | industrial shop of a small high school for the purpose of |
12 | assisting adults learn trades and enrich their education, and |
13 | many of the program's students were disabled World War I |
14 | veterans who needed specialized training to return to the work |
15 | force; and |

1 | WHEREAS, As the Great Depression loomed, this institution |
2 | provided desperately needed vocational training through a |
3 | partnership between the school and local industry, helping to |
4 | combat rising unemployment and leading to the development of the |
5 | "Williamsport Plan," which was copied throughout the United |
6 | States; and |
7 | WHEREAS, The period leading up to World War II brought |
8 | changes within the school, which was formally named the |
9 | Williamsport Technical Institute in 1941; and |
10 | WHEREAS, During World War II, the Williamsport Technical |
11 | Institute operated on a 24-hour daily schedule, becoming one of |
12 | the nation's largest providers of training and retraining of |
13 | people with physical handicaps to form the backbone of the |
14 | defense industry; and |
15 | WHEREAS, The passage of the Community College Act of 1963 led |
16 | to the establishment of the Williamsport Area Community College |
17 | and, utilizing as its foundation, the Williamsport Technical |
18 | Institute; and |
19 | WHEREAS, In 1989, after continuous growth throughout the |
20 | 1970s and 1980s, the college became an affiliate of The |
21 | Pennsylvania State University, was renamed the Pennsylvania |
22 | College of Technology and is commonly referred to as "Penn |
23 | College"; and |
24 | WHEREAS, As an affiliate of The Pennsylvania State |
25 | University, Penn College is realizing its potential as this |
26 | Commonwealth's premier technical college, offering bachelor's |
27 | degrees, associate's degrees and certification programs; and |
28 | WHEREAS, For 20 years, the Pennsylvania College of Technology |
29 | has truly provided its students with "degrees that work"; |
30 | therefore be it |

1 | RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives congratulate the |
2 | Pennsylvania College of Technology on the occasion of its 20th |
3 | anniversary as an affiliate of The Pennsylvania State |
4 | University; and be it further |
5 | RESOLVED, That the Chief Clerk of the House of |
6 | Representatives transmit copies of this resolution to the |
7 | Pennsylvania College of Technology, One College Avenue, |
8 | Williamsport, PA 17701. |
