A RESOLUTION

Designating September 18, 2009, as "POW/MIA Recognition Day" in

2

Pennsylvania.

WHEREAS, For many Americans, the Korean War and the Vietnam

4

Conflict bring difficult memories; and

5

WHEREAS, For former prisoners of war and the families of

6

missing personnel, these memories and emotions are particularly

7

painful; and

8

WHEREAS, In the Korean War and the Vietnam Conflict, hundreds

9

of thousands of brave Americans left their homes and families to

10

defend freedom and democracy in the face of communist

11

aggression; and

WHEREAS, Thousands lost their lives in battle, and the fate

2

of as many as 88,000 Americans from past conflicts in still

3

unknown; and

4

WHEREAS, Many Americans held captive were subjected to

5

unspeakable horrors but maintained their honor, strong faith in

6

our nation and indomitable spirit; and

7

WHEREAS, There are approximately 50,000 courageous former

8

prisoners of war living among us, including those held captive

9

during World War II, who all still cope with the physical and

10

emotional effects of their captivity; and

11

WHEREAS, We owe a profound debt of gratitude to the quiet

12

heroes who served our nation so well and sacrificed so much, and

13

to the families of those still missing in action we pledge our

14

unwavering commitment to achieve the fullest possible accounting

15

of their loved ones and to seek the recovery, repatriation and

16

identification of the remains of those who have died; and

17

WHEREAS, The flag of the National League of Families of

18

American Prisoners of War and Missing in Southeast Asia, a black

19

and white banner, symbolizing America's missing service members

20

and our unshakable resolve to ascertain their fate, is flown as

21

a powerful reminder of our duty to honor and account for all

22

persons who have so faithfully served America; therefore be it

23

RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives designate

24

September 18, 2009, as "POW/MIA Recognition Day" in

25

Pennsylvania.
