A RESOLUTION

1

Designating the month of November 2011 as "Pancreatic Cancer

2

Awareness Month" in Pennsylvania.

3

WHEREAS, In 2011, an estimated 44,030 people will be

4

diagnosed with pancreatic cancer in the United States and 37,660

5

will die from the disease; and

6

WHEREAS, Pancreatic cancer is one of the deadliest cancers

7

and is the fourth leading cause of cancer deaths in the United

8

States; and

9

WHEREAS, When symptoms of pancreatic cancer present

10

themselves, it is usually too late for an optimistic prognosis,

11

and 74% of pancreatic cancer patients die within the first year

12

of their diagnoses while 94% of pancreatic cancer patients die

13

within the first five years; and

- 1 -

1

WHEREAS, Of all the racial/ethnic groups in the United

2

States, African Americans have the highest incidence of

3

pancreatic cancer, between 34% and 70% higher than the other

4

groups; and

5

WHEREAS, Approximately 2,070 deaths will occur in

6

Pennsylvania in 2011; and

WHEREAS, Pancreatic cancer research constitutes only

17

arrest it; and

18

WHEREAS, The Pancreatic Cancer Action Network is the first

19

and only national patient advocacy organization that serves the

20

pancreatic cancer community in Pennsylvania and nationwide by

21

focusing its efforts on public policy, research funding, patient

22

services and public awareness and education related to

23

developing effective treatments and a cure for pancreatic

24

cancer; and

25

WHEREAS, The Pancreatic Cancer Action Network supports

26

patients currently battling pancreatic cancer, as well as the

27

families of those who have lost their lives to the disease, and

28

is committed to nothing less than a cure; and

29

WHEREAS, The good health and well-being of the residents of

30

Pennsylvania are enhanced as a direct result of increased

- 2 -

1

awareness about pancreatic cancer and research into early

2

detection, causes and effective treatments; therefore be it

3

RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives designate the
