A RESOLUTION

Recognizing September 21, 2011, as "International Day of Peace"

2

in Pennsylvania.

3

WHEREAS, The issue of peace embraces the deepest hopes of all

4

peoples and remains humanity's guiding inspiration; and

5

WHEREAS, In 1981, the United Nations proclaimed that

6

International Day of Peace be "devoted to commemorating and

7

strengthening the ideals of peace, both within and among all

8

nations and peoples"; and

9

WHEREAS, The United Nations expanded the observance of

10

International Day of Peace in 2001 to include the call for a day

11

of nonviolence and invited all nations and people to honor a

12

cessation of hostilities for the duration of the day; and

13

WHEREAS, There is growing support within this Commonwealth

14

for the observance of International Day of Peace, which affirms

15

a vision of our world at peace and fosters cooperation among

individuals, organizations and nations; and

2

WHEREAS, Global crises impel all citizens to work toward

3

converting humanity's noblest aspirations for world peace into a

4

practical reality for future generations; and

5

WHEREAS, The theme of the 2011 International Day of Peace is

6

"Day in Pittsburgh Without Violence," which will include a 24-

7

hour vigil for peace and a rally against violence; and

8

WHEREAS, Commemoration of the International Day of Peace

9

includes both small-scale and large-scale events such as

10

community service projects, cultural exhibits and performances,

11

a moment of silence, ringing of bells, vigils, religious

12

services in various places of worship and other education and

13

public awareness activities; therefore be it

14

RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives recognize

15

September 21, 2011, as "International Day of Peace" in

16

Pennsylvania, and urge all government departments and agencies,

17

organizations, schools, places of worship and individuals in

18

this Commonwealth to commemorate this important day in order to

19

help establish a global day of peace in our homes, our

20

communities and among nations.
