A RESOLUTION

Recognizing Frederick Douglass on the anniversary of his birth

2

for his leadership, courage, determination and vision as one

3

of the foremost leaders of the abolitionist movement. 

4

WHEREAS, Frederick Douglass, whose full name was Frederick

5

Augustus Washington Bailey, was born into slavery on the eastern

6

shore of Maryland in 1818; and

7

WHEREAS, A childhood nickname, "little Valentine," caused Mr.

8

Douglass to adopt February 14 as his birthday; and

9

WHEREAS, During the course of Frederick Douglass' remarkable

10

life, he escaped from slavery, helped other slaves flee to their

11

freedom through the underground railroad, became internationally

12

renowned for his eloquence in the cause of liberty, and went on

13

to serve the Federal Government in several official capacities,

14

including president of the Freedman's Bank, and subsequently in

15

various national service positions, including United States

16

Marshal for the District of Columbia and diplomatic positions in

Haiti and the Dominican Republic; and

2

WHEREAS, Immediately after the Civil War began, Mr. Douglass

3

argued for the establishment of black troops in the Union Army;

4

and

5

WHEREAS, Mr. Douglass saw the Civil War as a struggle between

6

freedom and slavery and eventually helped recruit black troops

7

for the Union Army; and

8

WHEREAS, Mr. Douglass' personal relationship with President

9

Abraham Lincoln helped persuade the President to make

10

emancipation a cause of the Civil War; and

11

WHEREAS, In 1872 Frederick Douglass, with a nomination by the

12

Equal Rights Party, became the first African American to be

13

nominated as a vice-presidential candidate in the United States;

14

and

15

WHEREAS, Frederick Douglass' lifelong struggles for liberty

16

and the rights of others have become an inspiring part of the

17

darkest chapter of American history; and

18

WHEREAS, Frederick Douglass was often found saying, "I would

19

unite with anybody to do right and with nobody to do wrong"; and

20

WHEREAS, Frederick Douglass served his country bravely until

21

his death on February 20, 1895; therefore be it

22

RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives honor Frederick

23

Douglass for his leadership, courage, determination and vision

24

on the anniversary of his birth on February 14, 2009.
