A RESOLUTION

 

1Honoring the life and memory of Stanley Frank "Stan" Musial, a
2Baseball Hall of Fame player born in Donora, Pennsylvania,
3and extending condolences to his family and friends.

4WHEREAS, Born Stanislaw Franciszek Musial on November 21,
51920, Stanley Frank "Stan" Musial was a retired American
6professional baseball player who was elected to the Baseball
7Hall of Fame in 1969; and

8WHEREAS, Nicknamed "Stan the Man," Musial played 22 seasons
9in Major League Baseball for the St. Louis Cardinals from 1941
10to 1963; and

11WHEREAS, A 24-time All-Star selection, Musial accumulated
123,630 hits and 475 home runs during his career, was named the
13National League's Most Valuable Player three times and was a
14member of three World Series championship teams; and

15WHEREAS, Musial was born in Donora, Pennsylvania, where he
16frequently played baseball in both informal and organized
17settings, eventually playing on the baseball team at Donora High

1School; and

2WHEREAS, Signed to a professional contract by the St. Louis
3Cardinals as a pitcher in 1938, by the time Musial made his
4Major League Baseball debut on September 17, 1941, he had been
5converted into an outfielder; and

6WHEREAS, Musial quickly established himself as a consistent
7and productive hitter, leading the National League in six
8different offensive categories in 1943 while concurrently
9earning his first MVP award; and

10WHEREAS, After winning his second World Series in 1944,
11Musial missed the entire 1945 season while serving with the
12United States Navy; and

13WHEREAS, Receiving his nickname of "The Man" from Brooklyn
14Dodger fans in 1946, Musial continued his consistent hitting and
15annual All-Star appearances; and

16WHEREAS, In 1948, Musial finished one home run short of
17winning baseball's Triple Crown; and

18WHEREAS, After struggling offensively in 1959, Musial
19utilized a personal trainer to increase his productivity until
20retiring in 1963; and

21WHEREAS, Musial was chairman of the President's Council on
22Physical Fitness and Sports between 1964 and 1967; and

23WHEREAS, Musial served as General Manager of the Cardinals in
241966 and 1967, in addition to overseeing various businesses such
25as a restaurant; and

26WHEREAS, Elected to the Baseball Hall of Fame in 1969, the
27first time his name appeared on the ballot, Musial was selected
28for the Major League Baseball All-Century Team in 1999; and

29WHEREAS, President Obama awarded Musial the Presidential
30Medal of Freedom, the nation's highest civilian honor, in 2011;

2WHEREAS, Sadly, Musial passed away on Saturday, January 19,
32013, at 92 years of age; and

4WHEREAS, In addition to his devoted wife, Lillian S. Labash
5Musial, he will be missed by his four children, Dick Musial and
6his wife Sharon, Gerry Ashley, Janet Schwarze and her husband
7Marty and Jean Edmonds and her husband Dave; eleven
8grandchildren, Jeff Musial, Laura Musial and her husband Thomas
9Sachson, Natalie Musial, Tommy Ashley, Camille Pinkerton and her
10husband Bob, Christopher Ashley and his wife Jimena, Julie
11Linihan and her husband Jeff, Brian Schwarze, Andrew Edmonds,
12Lindsey Edmonds and Allison Edmonds; and twelve great-
13grandchildren, Courtney Musial, Tyler Musial, Claire Musial,
14Lucy Musial, William Sachson, Heath Sachson, Caroline Murphy,
15Molly Murphy, Kate Murphy, Charlie Pinkerton, Clifford Pinkerton
16and Breck Pinkerton; therefore be it

17RESOLVED, That the Senate honor the life and memory of
18Stanley Frank "Stan" Musial, a Baseball Hall of Fame player born
19in Donora, Pennsylvania, and extend condolences to his family
20and friends.
