| A RESOLUTION |
| |
1 | Recognizing the month of February 2010 as "American Heart Month" |
2 | in Pennsylvania. |
3 | WHEREAS, Cardiovascular disease is the nation's leading cause |
4 | of death with direct and indirect costs estimated to be $503.2 |
5 | billion in 2010; and |
6 | WHEREAS, Cardiovascular disease accounts for more than 34% of |
7 | all deaths nationwide; and |
8 | WHEREAS, Each year 53% of all deaths are due to |
9 | cardiovascular complications and 61% of stroke deaths occur in |
10 | females; and |
11 | WHEREAS, Nearly 2,300 Americans die of cardiovascular disease |
12 | each day, an average of one death every 38 seconds; and |
13 | WHEREAS, More women die of heart disease, stroke and all |
14 | other cardiovascular diseases than the next five leading causes |
15 | of death combined, including cancer; and |
16 | WHEREAS, An estimated 785,000 people in the United States |

1 | will have a new coronary attack, an estimated 470,000 people |
2 | nationwide will have a recurrent attack and an additional |
3 | 195,000 "silent" coronary attacks will go undiagnosed this year; |
4 | and |
5 | WHEREAS, More than 90% of primary care physicians do not know |
6 | that heart disease kills more women each year than men; and |
7 | WHEREAS, Women are less likely than men to receive certain |
8 | diagnostic testing and treatments, such as angioplasties and |
9 | stents, for cardiovascular diseases; and |
10 | WHEREAS, Drug and medical device effectiveness may differ in |
11 | women and men, yet doctors and researchers often do not know how |
12 | safe and effective a particular medicine or device is for women; |
13 | and |
14 | WHEREAS, The research is clear that there are tools available |
15 | to increase survival rates from cardiovascular disease; and |
16 | WHEREAS, The American Heart Association's 2020 impact goal |
17 | seeks to improve the cardiovascular health of Americans by 20% |
18 | while reducing deaths from cardiovascular diseases and stroke by |
19 | 20% through research, population and community level |
20 | interventions and public health and policy measures; and |
21 | WHEREAS, Efforts of the American Heart Association encourage |
22 | citizens to help save lives by calling 911 if symptoms occur, |
23 | become trained in CPR and encourage comprehensive automated |
24 | external defibrillator programs in their communities; and |
25 | WHEREAS, Making the right choices relating to proper |
26 | nutrition, physical activity, doctor visits and other lifestyle |
27 | methods is essential to living a heart-healthy life; and |
28 | WHEREAS, The American Heart Association is celebrating |
29 | February 2010 as "American Heart Month" and promoting education |
30 | and awareness by encouraging citizens to learn the warning signs |

1 | of heart attack and stroke; therefore be it |
2 | RESOLVED, That the Senate recognize the month of February |
3 | 2010 as "American Heart Month" in Pennsylvania and urge all |
4 | citizens to recognize the critical importance of tools and |
5 | skills that will increase survival rates from cardiac arrest so |
6 | that thousands of lives can be saved each year. |
