| A RESOLUTION |
| |
1 | Recognizing the week of October 7 through 13, 2012, as |
2 | "Influenza Prevention Awareness Week" in Pennsylvania. |
3 | WHEREAS, Each year in the United States, on average, more |
4 | than 200,000 people are hospitalized from influenza-related |
5 | complications, and approximately 36,000 people die from |
6 | influenza-related causes; and |
7 | WHEREAS, The most effective strategy for preventing influenza |
8 | is annual vaccination; and |
9 | WHEREAS, The United States Centers for Disease Control and |
10 | Prevention now recommends annual seasonal influenza vaccination |
11 | for all people six months of age and older; and |
12 | WHEREAS, Children and young adults five years of age to 19 |
13 | years of age are three to four times more likely to be infected |
14 | with influenza than adults; and |
15 | WHEREAS, School-age children are the population group most |
16 | responsible for the transmission of contagious respiratory |
17 | viruses, including influenza; and |
18 | WHEREAS, Influenza vaccines not only protect vaccinated |

1 | individuals, but also help protect entire communities by |
2 | preventing and reducing the spread of influenza, as well as |
3 | reducing costs associated with missed work, doctor visits and |
4 | hospitalizations; and |
5 | WHEREAS, All Pennsylvanians are encouraged to get influenza |
6 | vaccines for themselves, and all parents in this Commonwealth |
7 | are encouraged to ensure their children are vaccinated; |
8 | therefore be it |
9 | RESOLVED, That the Senate recognize the week of October 7 |
10 | through 13, 2012, as "Influenza Prevention Awareness Week" in |
11 | Pennsylvania. |
