WHEREAS, Conster "Connie" Willow Davis has served as a foster | ||
grandparent to kindergartners at Galvan Elementary School in Corpus | ||
Christi for 15 years; and | ||
WHEREAS, A federally funded initiative offered through the | ||
Senior Corps service organization, the Foster Grandparent Program | ||
is composed of 55-year-old and older volunteers who donate at least | ||
20 hours per week to benefit the local community; and | ||
WHEREAS, At 93, Ms. Davis is the oldest among some 70 | ||
volunteers involved in the Corpus Christi branch of the program; | ||
she aids the teacher with such daily tasks as organizing homework | ||
folders and filing student work and works around the school as | ||
needed; known as "Granny" to her students, she also provides extra | ||
assistance to those who move at a slower pace than their peers, | ||
working with them one-on-one to help them progress; and | ||
WHEREAS, Ms. Davis is no stranger to education, having spent | ||
some time as a young woman teaching in McKinney schools; during | ||
World War II, she worked in the nation's behalf as a riveter, and | ||
she subsequently earned a living as a seamstress in the garment | ||
industry; she learned of the Foster Grandparent Program when she | ||
signed up to volunteer at the Corpus Christi State Supported Living | ||
Center, where she assisted people with disabilities for a time; and | ||
WHEREAS, Through her selfless contributions, Connie Davis | ||
has enriched the lives of countless Texans, and she has set an | ||
outstanding example of generosity to which all may aspire; now, | ||
therefore, be it | ||
RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 83rd Texas | ||
Legislature hereby honor Connie Davis for her many years of service | ||
with the Foster Grandparent Program and extend to her sincere best | ||
wishes for continued good fortune; and, be it further | ||
RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be | ||
prepared for Ms. Davis as an expression of high regard by the Texas | ||
House of Representatives. | ||
