A BILL TO BE ENTITLED
 
AN ACT
  relating to Texas Military Heroes Day in public schools.
         BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF TEXAS:
         SECTION 1.  Subchapter Z, Chapter 29, Education Code, is
  amended by adding Section 29.9071 to read as follows:
         Sec. 29.9071.  TEXAS MILITARY HEROES DAY.  (a)  To educate
  students about the sacrifices made by brave Texans who have served
  in the armed forces of the United States, the governor shall
  designate a day to be known as Texas Military Heroes Day in public
  schools.
         (b)  Texas Military Heroes Day shall include appropriate
  instruction, as determined by each school district.  Instruction
  may include:
               (1)  information about persons who have served in the
  armed forces of the United States and are from the community or the
  geographic area in which the district is located; and
               (2)  participation, in person or using technology, in
  age-appropriate learning projects at battlefields and gravesites
  associated with a person who has served in the armed forces.
         (c)  The agency may collaborate with other state agencies to
  promote Texas Military Heroes Day.
         SECTION 2.  This Act applies beginning with the 2017-2018
  school year.
         SECTION 3.  This Act takes effect immediately if it receives
  a vote of two-thirds of all the members elected to each house, as
  provided by Section 39, Article III, Texas Constitution.  If this
  Act does not receive the vote necessary for immediate effect, this
  Act takes effect September 1, 2017.
