WHEREAS, in March 2024, Virginia Commonwealth University student Nyla Harris saved the life of a woman experiencing cardiac arrest at a restaurant in Midlothian; and
WHEREAS, Nyla Harris has aspired to be a doctor since she was young, and her ultimate goal is to become a pediatrician; she is currently a biology major on the pre-med track at Virginia Commonwealth University; and
WHEREAS, Nyla Harris received cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) training while attending Manchester High School and had kept up with her training through a refresher course; and
WHEREAS, on March 8, 2024, Nyla Harris and her mother were visiting Eggs Up Grill, a local restaurant on Hull Street Road in Midlothian; and
WHEREAS, as she and her mother were preparing to leave the restaurant during the busy brunch hour, Nyla Harris observed a disturbance and upon further investigation discovered that a woman had lost consciousness while sitting at a booth; and
WHEREAS, while her mother and members of the Eggs Up Grill staff called 911, Nyla Harris took immediate action once she realized that the woman had gone into cardiac arrest and was not breathing; and
WHEREAS, Nyla Harris performed CPR on the woman until she regained consciousness and emergency medical services personnel arrived on the scene; and
WHEREAS, during her lifesaving efforts, Nyla Harris also had the presence of mind and compassion to reassure the woman's husband, stating to him, "We're going to get her back"; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, That Nyla Harris hereby be commended for her quick thinking and decisive actions to save the life of a woman whom she'd never met; and, be it
RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to Nyla Harris as an expression of the House of Delegates' admiration for her heroic actions.
