SENATE BILL NO. 509 Offered January 13, 2010 Prefiled January 13, 2010 A BILL to amend and reenact § 3.2, as amended, of Chapter 618 of the Acts of Assembly of 1981, which provided a charter for the Town of Vinton, relating to vacancies on the council. ---------- Patron-- Smith ---------- Referred to Committee on Local Government ----------

Be it enacted by the General Assembly of Virginia:

1.  That § 3.2, as amended, of Chapter 618 of the Acts of Assembly of 1981 is amended and reenacted as follows:

§3.2. Vacancies on council.

Vacancies on the council shall be filled within thirty forty-five days of when the vacancy occurs, for the unexpired portion of the term, by a majority vote of the remaining members of the council. If, however, the unexpired portion of the term is more than two years, the person appointed by council shall serve only until the next regular councilmanic election, at which time the vacancy shall be filled by the electorate.
