Commending Zion Baptist Church.
----------
Patron-- Lucas
----------

WHEREAS, Zion Baptist Church of Purdy and its faithful congregation celebrate 150 years of service to the Lord and the community in 2010; and

WHEREAS, organized in 1860, the original members met in a little valley off the edge of a low-grown cornfield under a bush hovel until after the emancipation; and

WHEREAS, G. Batte and his wife, A.R. Batte, then bought an acre of land to build a church; the first church was a log building that served the congregation as it grew in faith and numbers; and

WHEREAS, in 1986, the old structure was destroyed by fire, but the Zion Baptist Church congregation persevered and with the help of various businesses, organizations, and individuals built a new sanctuary; and

WHEREAS, over the years, the building has been enlarged by various additions, including a fellowship hall and choir room; the membership increased and the church added a Bible study, annual Sunday School picnic, Vacation Bible School, and male chorus; and

WHEREAS, Zion Baptist Church has been served throughout its 150-year history by immensely dedicated and able pastors and lay staff, who have provided visionary leadership, devout worship, meaningful Christian education, and enthusiastic ministry and community missions; and

WHEREAS, throughout its long history, Zion Baptist Church has provided its devoted congregation, its neighbors, and the community with a special place to worship, to help others, and to grow in faith and service; now, therefore, be it
