HOUSE CONCURRENT

RESOLUTION

 

 

requesting the office of veterans' SERVICES, assisted by the department of accounting and general services and the department of defense, to develop a plan to create memorials to the veterans of the Persian Gulf War, the Afghanistan-Iraq War, and to women veterans of World War II ON the grounds of the State Capitol near the Korean and Vietnam war Memorial.

 

 

 


     WHEREAS, the freedom and security that citizens of the United States enjoy today are direct results of the sacrifice and continued vigilance maintained by the United States Armed Forces over the course of our nation's history; and

 

     WHEREAS, the sacrifices of members of the United States Armed Forces have preserved the liberties that have enriched this nation, making it unique in the world community; and

 

     WHEREAS, members of the United States Armed Forces engaged in the Persian Gulf War from August 2, 1990 to February 28, 1991, that culminated in the liberation of Kuwait from the invasion by Iraq; and

 

     WHEREAS, members of the United States Armed Forces are even now engaged in the Afghanistan-Iraq War in an ongoing struggle against terrorism and to assist in establishing secure and stable governments in Afghanistan and Iraq; and

 

     WHEREAS, on July 24, 1994, Hawaii dedicated the Korean and Vietnam War Memorial on the grounds of the State Capitol; and

 

     WHEREAS, it is both fitting and necessary for the State to give tangible and visible recognition of the sacrifices and contributions of veterans from Hawaii who served in the Persian Gulf War and the Afghanistan-Iraq War, and to women from Hawaii who are veterans of World War II; now, therefore,

 

     BE IT RESOLVED by the House of Representatives of the Twenty-fifth Legislature of the State of Hawaii, Regular Session of 2010, the Senate concurring, that the Office of Veterans' Services, with the assistance of the Department of Accounting and General Services and the Department of Defense, is requested to develop a plan to create memorials to the veterans of the Persian Gulf War, the Afghanistan-Iraq War, and to women veterans of World War II on the grounds of the State Capitol near the Korean and Vietnam War Memorial; and

 

     BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Office of Veterans' Services is requested to include in the plan information on the availability of funds to support the memorials project from federal, state, and private sources; and

 

     BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Departments of Defense and Accounting and General Services are requested to provide assistance to and full cooperation with the Office of Veterans' Services; and

 

     BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Office of Veterans' Services is requested to submit a report to the Legislature, including any necessary proposed legislation, not later than twenty days prior to the convening of the Regular Session of 2011; and

 

     BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that certified copies of this Concurrent Resolution be transmitted to the Director of the Office of Veterans' Services, the Comptroller, and the Adjutant General.
