| A RESOLUTION |
| |
1 | Designating March 10, 2009, as the third annual "National Women |
2 | and Girls HIV/AIDS Awareness Day" in Pennsylvania. |
3 | WHEREAS, HIV/AIDS is a devastating disease having the |
4 | greatest impact on women and girls; and |
5 | WHEREAS, Twenty-six percent of all new AIDS cases are |
6 | attributed to women who have become infected with HIV through |
7 | heterosexual contact and drug use; and |
8 | WHEREAS, Minority women represent a disproportionate number |
9 | of those affected by HIV/AIDS, in particular African-American |
10 | women between 25 and 34 years of age; and |
11 | WHEREAS, According to the Office of Women's Health, United |
12 | States Department of Health and Human Services, community events |
13 | and communication raise awareness of the increasing impact of |
14 | HIV/AIDS on the lives of women and girls; and |
15 | WHEREAS, "National Women and Girls HIV/AIDS Awareness Day" |
16 | promotes discussion and provides facts on how women and girls |
17 | can prevent infection, as well as information on how to live |

1 | with the disease; therefore be it |
2 | RESOLVED, That the Senate designate March 10, 2009, as |
3 | "National Women and Girls HIV/AIDS Awareness Day" in |
4 | Pennsylvania and urge all citizens to strongly support this day |
5 | and participate in events planned to commemorate the occasion. |
