HOUSE BILL NO. 1829
AMENDMENT IN THE NATURE OF A SUBSTITUTE

A BILL to require the Board of Education to take certain regulatory actions relating to add-on endorsements for mathematics teachers.
Be it enacted by the General Assembly of Virginia:
1. § 1. That the Board of Education (the Board) shall take the following regulatory actions relating to add-on endorsements for mathematics teachers:
1. Develop and approve a geometry add-on endorsement for teachers licensed by the Board to provide instruction in geometry for students in kindergarten through grade eight; and
2. Amend its regulations establishing the criteria for earning an Algebra I add-on endorsement set forth in 8VAC20-23-440 to (i) eliminate the requirements that candidates complete coursework in calculus, Euclidian geometry, probability and statistics, and discrete mathematics and (ii) permit candidates to receive a passing score on the Praxis Algebra I (5162) add-on endorsement exam in lieu of the requirements that candidates complete coursework in elementary functions, introductory college algebra, trigonometry, and linear algebra.
